back in july i posted my story concerning a serious case of DCS leading
to a spinal cord injury. just to let you guys know what's happening so far: i was discharged from the hospital on august 3 after spending 27 days courtesy of duke university medical center. after seven weeks of intense PT, i can now walk w/o support, albeit wobbly - my fine motor skills that control balance in the ankles and hips are still affected, but improving. i still have residual leg spasms, hypersensitivity and decreased sensations below the waist, but feelings in legs are slowly returning toward normal. long term prognosis is good, but i'm still looking at maybe 12 more months of limited mobility. (i'm aiming to be skiing at lake tahoe in february) lessons learned: 1) damn thankful for DAN insurance. 2) be conservative - neither dive computers nor tables are infallible - with your dives 3) always do a safety stop for as long as possible. 4) if you have upper respiratory congestion, limit your diving. 5) if you're over 40 yo, don't dive using the french navy tables. if anyone's coming to the Seas 2000 Scuba Expo in Raleigh october 14-15, drop me a line. maybe we can meet for a beer. -- jim frei stormwater services group, llc raleigh, nc http://www.stormwatergroup.com |
