Hi everyone,
While this topic seemed to spark discussion about the "idiots" right to make
up his free will, there is another side note to the spearfishing story. This
same diver who I called "idiot" was the dive buddy on another death several
months ago. While it was not his fault, his leading by example did not help
the situation at all. The diver who died was a recently certified OW diver,
and had no idea of the risks of deep diving and was encouraged to just
follow the more experienced. The dead diver made up his own mind to follow
to extreme depths and paid the ultimate price for it. I am sure that the
more experienced divers are probably calling themselves idiots, in fact I
have seen what it did to them. I do know that it has not stopped their deep
dives, but they definitely use more caution now. Sure we live in a free
country and everyone can make up his or her own mind, but remember there are
consequences that can be permanent. I retract my use of the word "idiot" to
describe the practice, but how about this one..DUMBASS. Maybe that is more
appropriate.
