From 38 shark attacks in 1988, the number of attacks has steadily increased, most likely from the increase in coastal tourism. Only 10 deaths resulted from the 79 attacks last year. Florida had, by far, the most shark attacks with 34, followed by North Carolina with 5, California with 3, and Hawaii with 2.
